feel like a lot longer than that for chuck hagel today, as republicans gear up for a good old-fashioned grilling on his nomination for secretary of defense. one topic sure to come up is israel, which just launched an air strike in syria that u.s. officials say targeted a convoy of russian-made weapons that were headed for lebanon. now russia, the arab league, and hezbollah are all condemning the action. >>> and the new chairman of the senate foreign relations committee pays back $60,000 to a donor for airplane rides. and that donor is under investigation by the fbi. much more on a stranger sorry surrounding senator bob menen z menendez. good morning from washington. it's thursday, january 31st, 2013. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. now less than 30 minutes away from the start of chuck hagel's confirmation hearing to become the next secretary of defense. we'll take you there live for his opening statement, along with what's expected to be some tough questioning from some big-name republicans. let's get right to my first read of the morning. let's start with the hag

senator chuck hagel. we want to welcome to the table two experts. did his nomination surprise you? >> it did not. he spent keeping himself on tainted and logging and other kinds of things. when you look at the transition from leon panetta and asking what kind of person you would have in their, eventually to deal with what will be a shrinking defense budget, i think chuck hagel seemed a very obvious choice. i basically thought that is where the president was going to go early on. host: this is a the news from "the new york times". the war and against hagel and republicans called him in the piecer based on what he said in iraq. he voted for the war but turned against it. easer sings very strong. guest: he voted for it and then had criticism of how it was being carried out. when you talk about the secretary defense, the most important thing that happened during the war is the surge. he voted against the surge. he called the worst mistake since vietnam. we know in terms of the military, strategy and the search worked. it was very successful. when you're talking about putting somebody in the

with a showdown on capitol hill, minutes from now, former republican senator chuck hagel begins his uphill battle to become the nation's defense secretary. the vietnam vet will testify before the senate armed services committee in just about 30 minutes. he won't have an easy time of it. critics painted hagel as anti-israel, homophobic and way too weak on iran. there have been even anti-hagel ads paid for by anonymous donors. >> while president obama says all options are on the table for preventing a nuclear iran, hagel says military action is not a viable, feasible, responsible option. >> chris lawrence is at the pentagon and chris hagel was also accused of wanting to gut the defense department so what kind of day do you think is on tap for him? >> carol, it's likely to be a pretty rough one. with avenue got word from insiders haguele is going to testify that the militant group hezbollah is a terrorist organization and that military options are on the table for iran. it's not earth-shattering, except when you compare it to what he's already said. chuck hagel's past is about to come

great, so that's the good news. more again on hagel and this team, this foreign policy team. it occurs to me, gentlemen, that looking at this team this is not the team of rivals that president obama assembled in the first obama term. this is really the team of buddies, and it's all male. how does that play politically? zoo see that some cabinet posts are almost rewards for strong deputies, good super staffers. we're want seeing the president do this. he wants the people that he wants there, i mean, in a very -- he and -- look, chuck hagel was probably not the first choice of a lot of folks inside the west wing. there's some questions. can he manage a bureaucracy of his size? how many people are qualified to manage a bureaucracy the size of the defense department? he set that question aside. this is -- this was the president's choice, first choice, and obviously this very close relationship with john brennan, trying to give sort of the cia its mojo back, if you will, in the intelligence community, and i think that that's something that brennan -- that some folks in the intel comm

here, e.j.? >> first of all, i think hagel is actually in pretty good shape. i think a critical event in this whole battle was when he met with senator chuck schumer and schumer gave his blessing, endorsed hagel. i think the one issue that could give energy to the opposition was whether hagel was pro-israel and with schumer's blessing, schumer is a well-known supporter of israel. this was a signal to the pro-israel community, a lot of other people, leaders in that community have endorsed hagel. so i think that pushed him very close to nomination. i think it was very interesting that senator levin at the beginning of the hearing listed all of the controversial statements that senator hagel has made -- not all of them but a substantial list, and i think he was trying to signal hagel is going to have the chance to answer all of these and he, levin, expects him to answer them satisfactorily. i think it would be surprising if in the end hagel were not confirmed. >> is that what this hearing is going to be about? are we mostly going to hear questions about statements he's made about i

president obama in introducing hagel and announcing his nomination is that hagel has a particular unique experience in the military as an enlisted ground pounder. one who fought the war in vietnam and as the president pointed out still carries shrapnel in the chest. twice wounded, two purple hearts. he has as the president said understands the consequences of war so he would be less likely than some previous secretaries in this job to commit troops to war that some might consider unnecessarily. now, i'll take a little bit of exception in my colleagues at first read who claim that the president chose him because hagel could not be intimidated by the generals. i have not covered any secretary of defense who is intimidated by the generals. they take the best advice from the military leadership and they, in turn, walk arm and arm over to the white house, give it to the president and that's where those kinds of decisions are made. but i can tell you, one of the biggest challenges facing chuck hagel if, in fact, he is confirmed by the senate, is this budget battle. not necessarily here in the
